Understanding Wilms’ Tumor

Wilms’ tumor is a rare type of kidney cancer that mainly affects children. Despite advances in medical research, kids with Wilms’ tumor face very low survival rates. Those with very high-risk relapsed Wilms’ tumor have it even worse, with survival rates between just 10-20%.

This cancer is sneaky, often showing few symptoms until it’s really advanced. For families, getting this diagnosis is a huge blow, as they face the harsh reality that their child’s chances of survival are slim. But there’s hope—a new clinical trial at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City offers a glimmer of light in this dark situation.

Hope on the Horizon: The Clinical Trial Tumor

Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center is known for its cutting-edge cancer research. They’re now developing a potentially lifesaving treatment for kids with very high-risk relapsed Wilms’ tumor. This trial aims to test a new treatment that could significantly improve survival rates and quality of life for these young patients.

Children’s Cancer Research Fund is committed to making sure this clinical trial is accessible to kids who need it. The potential impact of this trial is huge—it could turn despair into hope.

Nathan (2013-2022)

In Remembrance of Nathan – Forever Eight

To truly understand the importance of this trial, consider a child who did not have the benefit of receiving this groundbreaking treatment.

Wilms’ tumor took 8-year-old Nathan’s life in January 2022, after a grueling 6-year battle against the disease. His parents, Tricia and Jeff, brother Jeffrey and sister Natalie are passionate ambassadors for this trial, despite it not being developed in time to help Nathan. In his memory, they have asked for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund community to rally in support of other children who could benefit.

“If we close our eyes to it, nothing will change. Children are dying, families are broken, futures are lost. We want our children to grow up and we cannot do it alone.”
– Nathan’s mom, Tricia

Their story, and many others like it, are the heart and soul of our appeal. These children are more than statistics—they have dreams and potential. They are the reason we fight, and with your support, they can be the reason we succeed.
