Growing up in northern Virginia, Alex Monahan witnessed cancer up close – his grandmother passed away while he was in high school and his father faced it years later.
“Cancer has been part of my life,” Alex reflects. “I can’t imagine having a child go through it, but I know how hard it was for my family.”
Though drawn to medicine, Alex pursued technology and entrepreneurship at Stanford. After building and then selling his startup, OddsJam, he began thinking about his legacy and how he could make a meaningful difference. A simple Google search brought him to Children’s Cancer Research Fund, and he says he became “an instant supporter.”
“We’re the people 20 years ago,” he says. “What we invest in today will define what cancer care looks like for the next generation.”
Alex is particularly inspired by the role of technology in research. “AI and other tools can speed discovery, improve quality of care, and reduce treatment side effects,” he explains. With a focus on survivorship and quality of life, he leans on experts to guide where his support can have the greatest impact. Recent initiatives like CCRF’s brain tumor clinical trial at Children’s Minnesota are especially meaningful to him.
“I’m not a scientist,” he says, “but I can understand the why and the how. And I can do something.”
Spending time with cancer families in the CCRF suite at a pre-season Vikings game was another eye-opening experience. “Sports were my escape during hard times,” Alex says. “Seeing these kids’ excitement and resilience reminded me how important it is to step out of your bubble and help people.”
Though new to philanthropy, Alex offers advice: “Be realistic about what you can do. Money is a tool, so it’s what you do with it that matters. Access your resources, get started now, and don’t be afraid to understand the science behind your giving.” His first major donation was to CCRF, and the team helped him understand exactly how his gift supports research priorities – a clarity that keeps him inspired.
For Alex, funding childhood cancer research is personal, urgent and rewarding. And through thoughtful giving, he’s helping move the needle toward a brighter future for kids everywhere.
